The kids keep telling us that video is where it’s at, but TBH, we at CFO Brew are still partial to the written word. However, we’re willing to try new things.
For this edition of the Cheat Sheet Roundup, we scoured YouTube for hours (well, just a couple of minutes if you don’t count the Taylor Swift album review rabbit hole we fell down) to find you the best in finance and accounting advice.
Our usual disclaimer to the wise: You should always look for additional resources and expertise when doing complicated finance (or accounting) work because it can be difficult to accurately sum up sophisticated concepts in such a short space.
With that said, here are some of the best finance and accounting YouTube advice videos that we found this month.
- MyOnlineTrainingHub: 10 Excel accounting and finance formulas that will set you apartThis 21-minute offering released in April from Australian Excel guru Mynda Treacy walks through recently released Excel functions including, but not limited to, how to use trimrange, vstack, byrow, and filter. Treacy narrates video demonstrations on how each of the featured functions work and the steps that users need to follow.
This video is particularly helpful with the more complicated formulas, as viewers can pause and work out the steps at their own pace. Treacy also includes a free download of an example file and a free cheat sheet in the video description. - The CFO Show: New CFO checklist: The first 90 days
In this 31-minute interview-style video, host Melissa Howatson, CFO of Vena Solutions, talks with Tom Seegmiller, who recently completed his first 90 days as a new CFO at Texada Software. While the video is a year and a half old, and sponsored by Vena Solutions, it does offer useful tips for new CFOs.
Seegmiller talks about the biggest surprises as a new CFO, what he included on his 90-day checklist, and the importance of mentorship for finance leaders. - Harvard Business Review: A plan is not a strategyIt's three years old, but this nine-minute video seems particularly relevant in our current age of uncertainty. Strategy expert Roger Martin, professor emeritus at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, explains the difference between strategy and planning, and why strategic planning has nothing to do with strategy.
Martin offers Southwest Airlines’ growth as an example of a successful strategy in action. He also explains how to avoid the “planning trap.”
